Lines - Day 1
Here's my first go at the class assignment, shooting both JPG and RAW. I'm fortunate to have some really great scenery just a short walk from my house. These shots were all taken at the Carlyon Beach Park and Marina just before sunset Friday night.
I had a tough time comparing the two formats and doing the processing the same. I have an older version of Photoshop that doesn't support my current body's RAW files, so I have to view the RAW files in Lightroom.
I did all the adjustments to the RAW files in Lightroom. I used ACR in Photoshop to edit the JPG files. I used the auto white balance and auto tone settings in both programs as starting points and then adjusted to taste.
The last image is the JPG version. The rest of the images are all results from the RAW files. At this display size (700 pixels on the long side) I don't really detect much difference in quality and when zoomed in I didn't see a lot of difference.
I probably won't be switching to shooting in JPG any time soon, even though this exercise showed me that the extra quality I think I'm getting by shooting RAW may be negligible. I can't imagine just showing any image without doing at least some basic contrast adjustments and I find it easier to make adjustments to large volumes of images in Lightroom than in Photoshop or Bridge. That's largely because I'm familiar with working that way and I'm pretty sure if I had developed my personal workflow in Bridge / PS it could work just as well.
Critique is welcome.
