I did a little comparison with different methods for getting catch light in the eyes after using the umbrella. The external flash with diffuser still looks like an on camera flash since it gives Greg pinlights in his eyes. The bounce flash gave no pin lights, but no catch light either.
Since I don't have an umbrella, I would go with bounce flash when shooting indoors.
