Photoshop Gradient Tool

This was taken at Skokomish River High Bridge on Saturday. The top photo is metered off the white caps of the river. The light was very difficult to get a good exposure so I tried using the Photoshop graduated filter tutorial that Barbara suggested. This didn't work very well so I stacked (File -> Scripts -> Load into Stack) two images, one exposed for the sky (bottom layer) and the other for the valley (top layer). I added a layer mask to the top layer and used the gradient tool set to black - transparent. This allowed me to include the sky from the bottom layer and the valley from the upper layer. I think the results are very close to what I saw with my eyes. It was frustrating while trying to capture this scene but I'm glad I took a bracketed set of exposures.

  1. Nice job with the blend. I may have to try it some day.

Most of the pictures, that I tried the photoshop graduated filter didn't work, unless I had some color for the sky. Most of the time my sky was blown (thank you Washington!), so I had to use a photo where I knew I didn't blow out the sky.
